Howdy! This is a blog that serves as a way to better educate me on the topics that interest me. These include, but are not limited to economics, China, hockey, soccer, board games, and football.
In general, I am more than happy to chat and be corrected along the way. Or in the instance you are a Detroit sports fan, that we may endure our suffering together.
I also have a podcast, Nobody Expects the Dismal Science, with my buddy George Quick. In it, we as two empirically-oriented moderate Michigander libertarian types discuss the most important issues of the day – like economics and running backs not mattering. We also have on fun guests like Syrian refugees describing their life in Michigan and thoughts on the insurrection at the US Capitol, an African American libertarian woman/former criminal justice reporter who discussed racism and discrimination within the United States and libertarian movement, or the economist who is the leading meme lord behind Running Backs Don’t Matter.
If you are wondering about the name, I previously lived briefly in China where I worked at a state-sponsored media outlet, can speak Mandarin at the level of a developmentally challenged toddler (though I’m working to improve!), and am subscribed to Bill Bishop’s outstanding Sinocism newsletter. The name is a pun on the slightly disparaging, but common, word for foreigner in Chinese, 老外 (lao-wai), and the wai is said exactly like the “Wy” in my name. I guess by American standards, that makes me more clever than average and a China expert or something…
